Tallgrass Prairie Visitors Center
Designed as a gateway to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, the Visitor Center draws on the agricultural building traditions and natural environment of the Flint Hills region. The project reinterprets the familiar barn form, seen in the historic limestone barn located on the site, through a simple glazed volume sheltered by a folded roof clad in weathering steel that frames views across the prairie, provides natural daylight, and minimizes solar heat gain. Intended to evolve over time, the roof will develop a natural patina that reflects the seasonal and environmental changes of the surrounding landscape. The building is conceived as a threshold between architecture and landscape, with the roof emerging from the ground to the north and opening toward expansive views to the south. Visitors enter via an accessible landscaped ramp leading to the upper-level exhibition spaces before descending through galleries, exhibits, and educational spaces below. This choreographed sequence creates a clear and intuitive path through the building, allowing visitors to experience the full volume of the space while maintaining a distinct workspace for National Park Service staff.
